Don't die for money

by FUTUTU NYAMA
(ZIMBABWE)

I now believe the more that everything happens for a reason. I am a Zimbabwean who is a qualified accountant and has always worked in Zimbabwe even during the 2007 to 2009 melt down.

I got an opportunity to get a new job to work for a mining concern at the end of 2006. Shortly there after things took a wrong turn for our country but the mine weathered the storm and all employees were taken good care of.

The country moved to a new currency which stabilized things for everyone but it all coincided with the start of hell on earth at the work place.

The scenario was that I got a new post where the boss preferred to speak to me through my predecessor. All work and instructions came through that guy and was even given the right to finalize my reports.

The situation became hell to the extent of becoming an employee of another employee who was at the other department. I tried to turn the tables by working extremely hard but in the end I suffered a serious burnout to the extent of failing to sleep and having work related hallucinations.

I took some leave after which I returned to the same grovel but soon got to the edge where I had to resign with no job in sight.

It took me some two months to find a job which was less paying than the previous one but I began to realize the importance of peace of mind.

I have since moved to another job which is moderate and even though those at former are doing better largely through shoe licking I still congratulate myself for my life over the dollar. I can afford to lie on my back and play with my sons unlike the scenario where I was being harassed by a rent seeking co worker.

It reminded me of a Bible scripture Psalm 4 verse 7 that says "You have filled my heart with greater joy than when their grain and new wine abound." NIV (1984)

You're Right!

I agree. It's never a good idea to work in an environment that devalues you. The situation you describe can kill you self confidence. And you cannot have a successful career without being self confident.
Best of luck to you as you move forward in your life and career.
