Habits of Successful People: Bad Habits They Manage Well To Get Where They Are

The habits of successful people are well known and widely talked about. They have positive habits, they work hard, they take risk and many more. In an earlier article I discussed the seven habits of highly successful people. They are based on my observations on dad’s friends, who own public listed firms, and who come from humble beginnings.

To understand how successful people get what they want – it is also important to know how they manage their bad habits.

These habits of successful people are a product of how they have conducted themselves through the years. Of course, these are just my observations and they are by no means scientific.

My hypothesis is that, some behaviors are a necessity for success. For example, the habit of working hard, delivers fruits of their labor across time. However, these habits of successful people do have their negative sides. In this example, the love for working hard also means becoming a workaholic. Surely, this cannot be all good. Hence, my observation of how they manage their “bad habits” enroute to success.

1. They Know When To Stop
I touched on this subject of working hard a little earlier. Sometimes, these people are seen as workaholics. Working hard in the right amount is a good habit. But overworking is a bad habit.

Working too hard can lead to compromising one’s health and personal time with family. Successful people while they know working hard is an essential habit for success, also know the need to manage this bad habit. They know they need to strike a balance between working hard and taking a break. One of the habits of successful people is knowing when to stop. Of course, there aren’t special formulas to tell when to stop. It takes years of experience, effort, trial and error.

2. They Don’t Play Victim
The second habit of successful people isn’t exactly a habit they manage insomuch as they resist adopting. If you observe around you, successful people have a habit of not playing the victim. Many successful people have met with so much disappointment and heartaches, it takes someone of great character to resist playing the “I am a victim of circumstances card”.

Many of my dad’s friends shared with him that they had to go against all odds in order to get where they are today. But never for once, did they feel sore for how people have treated them. Even if they do, they have managed it well, as you can hardly hear anger or frustration in their voices.

One of the many habits of successful people is that they resist complaining. They rather spend their time acting upon what they can do rather than how people have wronged them or not come in support in their time of need.

Sure, there is a lot we can learn from the habits of successful people. But it is equally important to learn how they manage and regulate their ‘bad’ habits in order to arrive where they are today.
