Better Work Ethics – How To Start Positive Shared Values In The Office

Better work ethics can solve a lot of the current problems that faces employers today. Low job satisfaction leading to low job satisfaction and high staff turnover can all be tackled if companies start to look at building better workplace ethics.

One of the biggest challenges for employers is they want to create a place where it is deem to be cool (whatever that term means to them) to work but expect workers to deliver at the same time.

Sometimes these values contradict each other because an employer and an employee come from very different angles.

One wants more profit and the other wants to deliver as little as possible for the same salary.

So, how do you develop better work ethic in the office?

1. The Leaders Must Have It
To develop better work ethic in the office, leaders in the company must have it. If you say you want workers to be hard working, then leaders themselves must lead by example. You cannot have all the bosses leave sharp at 5pm but expect the employees to clock more hours and not expect to hear any complains. Whatever work ethic that you want to build, make sure the bosses themselves do it. You will begin to see how this work ethic trickles down.

2. Start A Movement
Now, I am not saying get a pep rally going and start having people wear button badges and extol your new set of work ethics. This can be done in a very natural way. Band together some employees who believe in it. Allow them to get their hands on some good projects and see them deliver. If they have the right work ethic, they will deliver.

Soon the rest will discover how better projects go to certain people who have better work ethics. If they follow suit, you get a movement. If they do not, you are just letting the natural process of ‘detoxification’ take over.

3. Reward Those Who Practice It
The assignment of better projects to those who practice good work ethics is already a reward in itself. But you can go further to give credit; it can be as simple as an email that is copied to the rest of the department or company. Or you can even start formal ways of rewarding the better work ethic employees. This will serve as a reminder to what are the expectations of the company when it comes to work ethics.

4. Recruit Those Who Have It
You will need to increase your pool of people who can thrive with this new culture of better work ethics. As you start the process, the natural sequence of events is that those who believe in it will be more enthusiastic and get better job satisfaction. Those who do not fit will start to leave. This is your chance to recruit those who believe in your work ethics to join your company.

5. Make A Commitment
As with anything worth pursuing, the commitment from the management is important. Changing the culture of a company is not easy. It needs a disciplined pursuit of the vision to want to change and to implement that change.

6. Give It Time
This commitment takes time and the results takes time to show. You will need to be patient while the process is taking place. There is no need to rush or even be impatient and cut short the whole exercise. Proper work ethics takes time to implement.

How do you start positive shared values in the office? You start with the leaders, you make your expectations clear and you start a virtuous movement in the office. Then you start to recruit the people from outside that share this belief. Soon you will see better work ethics surface in your office.
