Getting Along with Your Boss – 7 Quick & Essential Insights To Pick Up

Getting along with your boss takes a little bit of training, a lot of observation and some thinking. After all, you are learning the habit of a different person and it is someone whom you likely interact eight hours of your weekdays.

So how do you go about getting along with your boss? Here are some insights you can pick up today.

1. Know His Style
You have probably heard this before. And it is worthwhile repeating it again here as a reminder. Every boss is different no matter how many bosses you have worked under. Sure, they have similarities but the content in which they manage is very different.

Learn his style. Does he like to be updated? Verbally or in written form? Is he a very casual person or is he very formal? What signals does he send when he is in a bad mood? Does he like people talking to him when he is in a bad mood? Learn these and you will be getting along with your boss in no time.

2. Think Like Him
If you are in your boss’s position why would he do the things he does and how does he complete the tasks he is given? No matter how much bosses say they want you to develop your style, they are also likely to like the person who does things similar to him. Learn up how he will do it. Do not worry; you are not losing your style. You are merely learning to add more styles to your arsenal. Something you will use when you become the boss.

3. Would You Employ You?
Learn to empathize with the boss. Sure you won’t know what he is going through in his private life but you can ask yourself this – if you are the boss would you employ you? Ask the very questions especially when the boss gets angry with you. It allows you to introspect and learn from your mistakes. It also allows you to see from your boss’s point of view. That is one way you can start getting along with your boss.

4. Figure It Out Yourself
Another way to getting along with your boss is to learn to figure things out for yourself. That does not mean you do not ask any questions to clarify. It means, as you work with him, learn about the nitty-gritty. Some work are bound to be repeats or are awfully similar. Learn when to ask and when to do it alone. Do not run to the boss with the same questions each time especially when you have done a lot of similar work. You boss will just think you are a bother and not very smart.

5. Bring Energy To Work
No matter how nasty your boss is, he cannot ‘defeat’ you if you consistently bring energy to work. What does that mean? You are enthusiastic and eager about work that is given to you. You tackle your work with a smile and you just go about it without a bother. That energy will rub off on other colleagues who can be your fuel and motivator even whilst your boss is not. He might even give up being nasty to you as he cannot win.

6. Don’t Try To Impress Him
Some veteran bosses are very cynical. They are skeptical of people going around trying to impress and compliment them. So, learn getting along with your boss without trying to impress him. This sort of bosses, you impress only when you deliver. Do your best work and you may find that is the best way in getting along with your boss.

7. You Don’t Have To Live With Him
When all else fails, tell yourself you don’t have to live with him. You just work with him. That’s it. Eight hours and you are out. Those eight hours of yours, you should have some goals. For example, you will be polite, calm and cooperative. You will do the best work possible given the circumstances. You will bring your all to work because you are made of tougher stuff. Even if you doubt your capability, here’s your chance to test it.

You will learn that getting along with your boss takes a lot of effort. It takes a mindful worker to notice the environment and what makes the boss ticks. With some effort you should be successful.
