Nice Expert: 7 Ways On How To Get Ahead While Others Are Failing At Work

What is a nice expert?. Basically, this is someone who has expertise, the skills and knowledge and yet, nice to work with.

Now, I sometimes wonder why is it that some people feel a need to position themselves as an expert to be an asshole or a bitch. They seem to feel that because they are good at what they do, they can be an asshole. As if they have earned the right to be an asshole and everyone has to accept it.

Well, I am here to convince you to be a nice expert and you can gain both the respect of people around you and still carry the sort of authority reserved for experts. The sad thing is some of these so called experts are personal perception. In many ways their expertise can be disputed.

You want to get ahead while others are failing at work, let me suggest this. Be a nice expert. Define and decide what you are good at and pursue it relentlessly. Then remember to be nice to work with and nice to work for, you will be naturally become a nice expert. There is no way but for people to say nice things about you and recommend you. They will want to have you - the nice expert- on their team.

1. Nice
First learn to be nice. Smile often. Just basically do things you have always been told as kids. Be courteous and respectful of people. Know your manners, use please and thank you. No one owes you a living. So whatever you do, know being nice can take you further in life.

2. Expertise
What do you do? Define what your personal brand is. Ensure you know the things you need to know to play your part and more. Get to know the details of everything and anything related to your field. Learn what the experts of your field say, their opinions and then form your own opinions on these. You cannot be a nice expert if you do not form opinions of your own.

3. Authentic
Importantly, be real. There is no need to pretend who you are not. Just because the field you are in is filled with serious people does not mean you cannot bring some humor into the field. Lighten people up a little. The more relaxed people are the better they do their work.

If people are always making and having too much fun at work, and if you are the serious type, that does not mean you cannot bring some discipline into the field. You need to be authentic when doing it and not step on the wrong toes. The trick is to be real about it and be nice. That uniqueness of a nice expert will propel you ahead of the rest.

4. Sincere
Be sincere in your approach to things. Be frank and give objective opinions not driven by personal agenda. Do not manipulate people as if they do not know what you are doing. Be careful about thoughts that you can get away with as it will blind your decision making.

5. Trustworthy
This means do not betray the trust of people around you. Let your authenticity, sincerity build you a reputation of someone who can be trusted. In the office place that is filled with politics and people who are failing, this may just be a breath of fresh air that you bring with you.

6. Make Others Look Good
Make people look good, especially your bosses who determine your increment and promotion. Make people who have informal power look good. Typically, these are the people who have the bosses ears. Can you be sincere and authentic while doing this? Yes, of course. It means you do not need to take credit for everything. Sometimes, letting someone take your credit can go a long way.

7. Freely Give
You need to know that you are an expert and by being an expert you have a lot to give. People have to keep up with you. Let them be selfish. You can be the generous one and see how it all comes back to you. Freely give and you will get ahead at work.

How to get ahead while others are failing at work? Strive to be an expert at work while making sure you are an expert that is nice to work with.

Then you will truly get ahead.
