Time Management Tool – Skills to Pick Up To Create Your Own Tool
Time management tool – is there such a thing? Perhaps there is, but personally to me, a tool is only as good as your skill. And how does skill come about? By learning, practicing and internalizing. Yet, tools are important. We can create them, give them steps but eventually you need to find your own style. Here are some time management tips to help you identify your own time management tool. 1. Steal Time Away One time management skill you need to pick up in order to create your own time management tool is to learn to steal time away. Learn to take a break. I know of people who constantly push themselves so much that they do not realize they are becoming more ineffective as time goes on as their energy is drained. Do not be inundated. The more you feel compressed, the less effective you are. Learn how to take a break. When you take a break you are giving time to your brain to sharpen itself. The caveat is - do not laze. When you use taking a break as an excuse to laze, it leads to procrastination. Put this time management skill of stealing time away into your time management toolbox.
2. Sense of Purpose One important time management tool is to have a sense of purpose. Learn to ask yourself - why are you doing this? When you understand the reason and meaning of why you are doing something you will learn to put in more effort. A sense of purpose gives you an impetus to complete the task and hence you will end up with better use of time. When the task is important you will do your best in completing the task to your best ability.3. Best Time Discover when is your most productive time. Cliché as this skill may be, learn to know when is your most effective time. Is it early in the morning, late afternoon or at night? How long can you go on with work before you become restless? For most people it is usually between 90 to 120 minutes. 4. Moods Have you considered that moods are also an important element in time management? In my opinion, it is. You should know what makes you happy, angry and sad. Let’s face it, moods affects your productivity. And your best use of time. Learn how to break away from them. Do you walk away from a potentially heated confrontation? Or do you go to a corner somewhere to sing? 5. Feel Positive Add feeling positive into your time management tool. When you feel negative, it will also affect your best use of time. I know of people who like to wallow for hours and days! All those productive time spent on non-productive feelings. Stop feeling sorry for yourself when something goes wrong. Wallowing wastes time. I have seen how some people spend time complaining away and the other party adds on, and soon hours are wasted just spreading ill will in the company. When you feel positive, you will naturally have better use of your time. 6. Be In The Moment Be here NOW. Be in the moment is one of the best tips of time management tool. The past is gone and the future is yet to come. Now determines the future. And what you do now determines the future. Whatever you are executing now, make sure it is your best and the future will take care of itself. There is no point planning when you cannot execute a good plan now. 7. Physical Contact and Voice Finally, know the importance of face time, especially in this day and age. Face time is essential if you want to be productive in using your time. There is something about calling and seeing someone face to face; you can be more productive that way. Messages are clear and action plans can be clarified with not just words but facial expressions and body language. All these face time will contribute to better understanding and less waste of resources. Learn, practice and internalize these skills, and you will be able to create you own time management tool, effectively.
